JobPay app – UX writing samples

Overview

JobPay is a freelance project management app.

It has two user flows for two user personas: freelancers and clients.

My job was to create a style guide and write or edit the UI text for all screens.

I got Figma mockups with some draft UI text created by the designer, with many UX writing mistakes and some blank screens.

This was the final project in the UX Content Collective certification course. I got an A+ with extra credit.

UX writing samples

I can only present a few samples here with brief explanations, to prevent current students from copying answers.

If you’d like to read the full case study, please email me (hayoun.tal [at] gmail.com) and I’ll send you a password protected link.

Below are some before and after examples, in which you can see my own text edits and additions in green. Click on any image to enlarge it.

Example 1: getting started

I used the following UX writing best practices:

  • The language is informal and conversational.
  • The tone is reassuring because at this touchpoint the user is both excited and possibly nervous about starting a new project.
  • The call to action is clear and the user knows what happens next.
  • Active verbs encourage the user to take action.

Example 2: forms and navigation

I used the following UX writing best practices:

  • The heading uses an active verb to motivate action.
  • The instructions are concise and clear.
  • The placeholder text helps users understand how to complete the form.

Example 3: empty states

I used the following UX writing best practices:

  • The heading and the text in this empty state give the user enough information about what they’re expected to do and what this screen will display later on.
  • The button has a clear call to action that motivates the desired action.
  • Tracking hours is one of the main features of the app. This screen helps users gain real value. This in turn will encourage them to keep using the up.
